Why 1&1 Webhosting Sucks

So here's the deal. I work for a website that has some very popular graphics that people use on MySpace and other social networking sites. People comment it to their friends. Over the last few months, it has grown to approximately 7 million hits per day.

On September 8th, 2006 we received an email from 1 & 1 customer support saying that we had until October 8th, 2006 to move providers because our site was taking too many resources for a shared hosting account. They stated that they would leave the service on until that date.

Then, on October 1, well before the October 8 deadline, an admin named Richard Winslow pulled the plug without warning. When I called customer service, a woman who was apparently new tried to put me on hold, but we were actually still listening to her talk to her boss about the situation. In between their chuckles about the extreme disruption they had caused to our business, the manager told her that the site's resource usage had "pissed Richard off" and that was why he shut it off earlier. The problem with that is that they waived any right they may have had to terminate service at will in our service contract when they told us in writing that they would leave the service on.

Our site was down for well over 24 hours while we scrambled to finish the setup of a new server. The graphics are small, so we were still under our bandwidth quota, and still within the time frame given to us. More than 10M impressions of the graphic were lost.

We're about to file suit against them. But just so you know, if 1 & 1 tells you anything - don't believe it!
